Outhaul sheave

Post by Guest »

Our outhaul boom-end sheave jammed up early in the last season. Not an urgent issue, since we could easily relead to the second one. Made note and had our yard take a look at it after haulout.

The rigger gave me the old one last week.

"outhaul sheave"

They replaced it with an aluminum sheave. The one we used for most of this past season was in the process of failing as well.

I plan to follow up with Sparcraft.

Other J/109 owners would be wise to inspect outhaul sheaves for this kind of damage.

We had to change out a spinnaker sheave this year for the same reason. Rigger said he has also changed out sheave of another J-109 as well. He believes plastic sheaves are degrading due to UV. Might be an issue worth bringing up to the J-Boat folks at the mid-winter rendevous (I can't make it this year) if anyone is going.

Had a similar issue with the #1 Jib halyard. Spoke to Sparcraft and they told me new equipment is now machined delrin rather than molded (cored as pictured) plastic of earlier boats. Comped me two new ones to install this season. We'll see...
