Genoa Staysail vs. Staysail in distance racing

Hello fellow J/109 sailors. I have questions regarding staysails and when to use them on the J/109. This is PHRF racing, not one design.
My boat came with both, the Genoa staysail and a staysail on a furler. My questions are when do I use these sails? WHen do I use the Genoa staysail instead of the staysail and vice versa?
I have heard that some will use the staysail any time a spinnaker goes up, but that is third person stuff and with both sails to chose from I need help understaning the differences. Please any help will be appreciated.
